Query w.r.t. PMP Contact Hours

It's general knowledge that contact hours can be acquired through various channels like classroom trainings, workshops, webcasts, podcasts, videos etc.. A bit of cursory research also reveals that usually the classroom/workshop type of contact programs are manifold times costlier than the other self-learning ones(webcasts, podcasts etc.). Additionally, one also has to take a few days off from one's (usually busy) work schedule to attend the classroom stuff.

My question is: are the classroom/workshops programs really worth the extra time/money one spends on them(from the quality of learning perspective)? If YES, can someone please provide me the names of some good quality R.E.P.s in Bangalore who provide classroom contact hours.

I was also wondering whether all self paced learning modules(webcasts/podcasts/videos) qualify as valid contact hours. Someone told me that for such a module to be officially accepted it needs to a) have an assessment test at the end of the module and then b) provide a certificate stating the same. Are these 'qualifiers' only true for non-R.E.Ps?

And finally, are there any other pre-reqs for these courses to be considered as valid contact hours?

Thanks in advance for replies.

Any one got any answers?

You are mixing 2 things here. One is volunteer services for project management and other is self learning.

Volunteering services for project management qualifies only for 45 hours of PDU now. You can ask the organization to issue you letter clearly stating the date, total hours and high level topics you took in the session.

Self learning can be accommodated upto 30 hours only in 3 years i.e. 10 hours each year. You need to keep handy the name of books or website and the topic you studied. You should have strong justification to support these 30 hours in 3 years cycle.

Courses offered by REP’s – Anything any REP offers qualifies full 60 hours of the PDU. REP’s is something PMI trusts and you don’t need to question in what format they are asking you to get PDU. Simple rule here ---- Pay the price and get PDU. When you have to choose the REP, as a rule of thumb choose the one that has least cost.

If you are a new PM and reading PM BoK seems some alien information or atleast lot of new things, then I suggest go for classroom training so you can clarify your doubts.

Otherwise take a cheap online class for 35 contact hours.

Either of them can only be taken from R.E.P to get the credit.
