How to get real time experience and expertise
Hi,
I am a business consultant and work on projects related to finance. Though I am higly motivated to become a project manager to perform real time activites in pm including risk, cost and schedules.
In my current organization there are roles for PM but they value more to people working on Business knowledge or technology. The people who do certificates like CFA have more values then people with PMP.
I have told my superviros on my aspirations to move towards project\program management but they see me addingmore values on my current roles. I seek directions on
1. To gain more experience on scheduling, cost and other projectmanagement tools and techniques are there any forums where I can contribute and my work gets validated.
2. Are there any tools and forums available online where I am presented with a scenario and I make project plans, calculate risk and generate various reports...like we do real time....
The idea is to be ready and gain expertise hence I become industry ready in case i need to go to a different project or company.

Its a tricky situation ,
Its a tricky situation , which almost everyone will face in their working career. PM seems more interesting, they seem to be in control , getting good salaries and imporant people in teams
However every job function has its own set of stress. As PM you are responsible for successful delivery of the project or you will be the first person to get beaten up.
Learning PM skills is just one aspect of PM career. Nothing can replace experience, which you can get only on the job. Its going through the grind, getting your hands dirty, making mistakes and then learning from it, if you are ready for all this, then look for PM role. Also PM need lot of people skills and patience. You have to follow up with people who will not do what they are suppose to do. You cannot offend anyone, else you will be a bad leader, but you still must get the work done.
I guess you need to sit and decide if PM job interest you. I am sure there will be opporutunities in your Business domain too. Try to take up PM activities so that you can learn and then if you like it, handle 1 small project as PM to see how it goes.

Not confused
Hi Admin,
Thanks for the response. I am not confused at all, because I was performing the task of Assocaite PM and Business consulting together in last project and hence have some amount of experience, but I eant to go deep in to it. And there are constraints in the current organization...Its a tough nut to crack because of certain company culture and mindset of senoir folks.
I have a dream to become a PM from last so many years. I see a good PM and i get impressed with him/her, i love they way they work.
